Tort reform and higher taxes are part of the slate of new laws affecting businesses that took effect July 1.
The sales tax in the commonwealth is increasing from 5 percent to 5.3 percent, thanks to a major transportation deal reached by the Virginia General Assembly earlier this year. Several business trade groups - which are traditionally opposed to sales tax hikes because of consumer distaste - didn't object to the increase.
